RemoveMacAI Offers a Mac Option to Remove Apple Intelligence Models

A new open-source Mac utility called RemoveMacAI is designed to disable Apple Intelligence in macOS 27, remove downloaded AI models and block the operating system from downloading them again. The project has drawn attention because Apple no longer provides one switch to turn off the full suite, according to MacRumors.

RemoveMacAI Offers a Mac Option to Remove Apple Intelligence Models

MacRumors reports that turning off individual Apple Intelligence features does not remove the downloaded models from a Mac’s storage. The tool’s project page says it uses a configuration profile to change system settings, remove the models and prevent their return. Its creator says the changes can be reversed.

MacRumors estimates the tool could free about 12 gigabytes, depending on which models are installed. That figure is not a guaranteed result for every Mac. Storage recovered can vary with the software already present, and the report notes that macOS may take time to remove model files after the system releases them.

Removing the models also means losing Apple Intelligence functions. MacRumors lists Siri-related AI features, Writing Tools, Genmoji, Image Playground, ChatGPT integration, summaries, smart replies, inline predictions, Photos Clean Up, Spatial Photos and Xcode predictive completion among the affected features. The project describes its purpose as removing the models, rather than selectively keeping those services.

The repository says the tool requires the user to approve a configuration profile through macOS settings. Its documentation also describes a checksum check for the downloaded release. These are claims from the project’s own page; Apple has not announced or endorsed the utility, and MacRumors explicitly says it is not recommending it.

There is a compatibility caveat. MacRumors reports that some restriction keys used by the tool were deprecated by Apple in macOS 26.4, though the developer says they still work in macOS 27.0.1. The project warns that a later system update could change that behavior, so current compatibility should not be treated as a lasting guarantee.

RemoveMacAI is therefore a tradeoff, not simply a storage-cleanup toggle: it aims to remove models and stop their automatic return, while turning off a broad set of Apple Intelligence features. The available reporting does not establish independent security testing of the third-party tool, and Apple provides no official support statement for it.

The story highlights a gap between disabling individual AI features and removing the files behind them. For now, the project’s own documentation and MacRumors’ report describe what the utility attempts to change, but users should not confuse those claims with an Apple-provided setting or supported Apple feature.
