Apple’s MagSafe 3 Cable Gets Firmware 3.2.0, but Changes Remain Unknown

Apple has released firmware version 3.2.0 for its USB-C to MagSafe 3 charging cable, the accessory used with compatible MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models. The previous listed version was 3.1.12. Apple has not said what the new software changes.

MacRumors reported the update on Monday, while French technology publication MacGeneration independently reported the same version and the absence of a change log. MacRumors says this is the cable’s first firmware update since February 2023. Neither report identifies a new feature, a repaired fault or a security fix.

The installation process is automatic, according to both reports. The cable updates over time when it is connected to a Mac and a power adapter. Neither publication describes a button, download or user-controlled installer for the cable, so there is no reported manual update procedure.

Owners also have no ordinary version readout in macOS System Information. MacRumors says Apple does not expose the cable’s firmware version there; MacGeneration likewise reports that Apple provides no way to consult the installed version. That makes it difficult for a user to confirm whether a particular cable has moved to 3.2.0.

Apple’s product page describes the accessory as a two-meter cable with a magnetic MagSafe 3 connector that guides the plug toward a Mac’s charging port. The company says the magnetic connection can release if someone trips over the cord, helping keep the laptop in place. Its LED turns amber while the battery charges and green when charging is complete.

Those product details explain the cable’s charging role, but Apple’s store page does not describe the firmware update. The update reports also do not say that version 3.2.0 changes charging speed, compatibility, the indicator light or the connector’s release behavior. Such changes should not be assumed from the version number alone.

The practical news is therefore limited but unusual: a Mac charging accessory has received a numbered software update, while Apple has supplied no public explanation of its contents and no simple way to check installation status. Users can continue to use the cable as described by Apple, but the available information does not establish a reason to expect a visible change.

Apple has not published a timeline for when every cable will receive the update. The reports say it arrives automatically over time while the cable is connected to a Mac and power adapter. Until Apple issues more detail, version 3.2.0’s purpose remains unconfirmed.
