SambaNova Raises Billion at Billion Valuation to Challenge Nvidia

AI chip startup SambaNova Systems raised $1 billion in Series F funding on July 8, reaching an $11 billion valuation. The round was led by General Atlantic, with participation from Seligman Ventures, T. Rowe Price, Capital Group, and Intel‘s venture arm.

The company is in the thick of a brewing hardware war. As AI labs and enterprises demand specialized chips for inference at scale, vendors like SambaNova are positioning themselves as Nvidia alternatives. The market is fragmenting fast.

What SambaNova Builds

SambaNova designs chips specifically optimized for running AI models in production, not training them. Inference—the process of deploying a trained model to generate predictions—is where most real-world AI workloads happen. The company believes it can do this more efficiently than Nvidia’s data center GPUs.

CEO Rodrigo Liang said more investors are joining the round in the coming weeks, with a second close expected soon. The company is preparing for an IPO as soon as 2027.

Real-World Deployments

SambaNova is not purely theoretical. JPMorgan Chase announced it will deploy SambaNova systems for on-premises inference in its enterprise AI workloads. SoftBank signed on as the first customer for the company’s next-generation SN50 chip, which begins shipping in late 2026.

These deployments are signals that enterprises are diversifying away from Nvidia. That trend accelerates capital flow to competitors.

The Chip Shortage Never Ended

Demand for AI chips vastly outpaces supply. Every startup in the space—whether designing chips, accelerators, or middleware—is fully booked. SambaNova’s challenge is not selling but manufacturing at scale quickly enough to capture market share.

The AI chip market will not be winner-take-all like mobile or cloud. Multiple vendors will win significant market share. SambaNova has real customers and a clear product roadmap. It looks like a rare venture bet with true optionality.
