OpenAI has released the GPT-5.6 family for general availability across ChatGPT, Codex and its API. The company’s launch announcement names Sol, Terra and Luna as the three models, with different levels of capability, speed and cost for users and developers.
OpenAI said the models followed a limited preview and were tested with expert organisations and trusted partners before the broader launch. The company also described additional safeguards and monitoring for the models, including work aimed at reducing misuse and improving reliability.
The models are positioned for different workloads. OpenAI presents Sol as its flagship option, Terra as a balanced model for everyday work and Luna as a faster, lower-cost model. Access and pricing can vary across ChatGPT plans and the API, so users must check the applicable product page.
Axios reported that OpenAI later moved GPT-5.6 Luna toward the default experience for users and gave Plus and Pro subscribers access to an improved GPT-5.6 Sol for conversations, research, planning and writing. The report also said users would see more control over reasoning effort.
The two reports show that the GPT-5.6 launch is both a model release and a product-distribution change. General availability does not mean that every account receives identical features at the same time, because plan, region and product differences can affect access.
OpenAI’s official release and Axios coverage establish the model family, rollout areas and later ChatGPT changes. They do not support claims that the models are perfect or suitable for every decision, so users should continue to review important outputs before acting on them.
