The distinction matters because a fresh MovieWeb cast report presents Weatherly among the familiar Season 24 lineup while noting that the director question remains open. CBS’s official premiere description presents Tony as a returning character in a case, not as Vance’s successor. MovieWeb also says the show has not identified who will replace Vance as director.
Paramount Press Express says the premiere, “Wayward Son,” follows the team as it deals with the aftermath of a shooting involving McGee’s son and investigates a threat to the Secretary of the Navy. Tony has just arrived in Washington to open a local office for his private security firm. CBS lists the episode for Tuesday, October 6, from 8 PM to 9 PM ET/PT.
The move to Washington gives Tony a defined reason to rejoin the agents, rather than simply appearing as a familiar face. In an August interview with TVLine, showrunner Steven Binder said Tony’s daughter had moved to the United States and was attending boarding school. Binder said Tony would open a satellite office for his security business in the capital. TVLine described Weatherly’s role as a season-long arc.
That earlier interview also gives context to how the character may fit into a team that has changed since he left. TVLine reported that DiNozzo departed after Season 13 and quoted Binder discussing his relationships with current agents, including Nick Torres and Timothy McGee. Those details describe the showrunner’s plans; they are not a promise that every past cast member will return.
For now, the confirmed story is specific: DiNozzo is back in the Season 24 premiere, with his security work bringing him to Washington and into the team’s case. The official release does not announce him as the new director. The episode airs on CBS on October 6. Paramount says it will also be available on Paramount+ under the live and on-demand terms for each subscription plan.
