The UMass Amherst and WCVB poll, reported by Axios Boston and WBUR, surveyed 445 likely Democratic primary voters from Aug. 5 through Aug. 12. Sixty percent said they would support Markey, while 32 percent chose Moulton and 7 percent remained undecided.

The poll’s margin of error was 5.8 percentage points. Axios reported that Markey’s lead extended across several groups, including women, liberals and each age group measured in the survey. Moulton’s strongest numbers came among independent and moderate voters.

Respondents also gave Markey an advantage on issue trust. The poll showed 66 percent trusting Markey over Moulton on the issues, compared with 34 percent for Moulton. Markey’s job approval was reported at 56 percent statewide and 83 percent among Democratic primary voters.

The numbers describe one survey conducted before the election and do not determine the result. WBUR noted that the primary was two weeks away when the poll was released, leaving time for both campaigns to continue making their case to voters. The election outcome will be decided by Massachusetts Democratic primary voters on Sept. 1.
