Apple Watch Series 12 Adds Battery Pull Tab, Yet Its Screen Still Blocks Repairs

Apple Watch Series 12 Adds Battery Pull Tab, Yet Its Screen Still Blocks Repairs

Apple Watch Series 12 repairability gets a modest boost from a battery pull tab, but its display still has to be lifted before anyone can reach the cell. iFixit scored the watch 4 out of 10, one point above the last base model it rated. The Ultra 4 also scored 4 out of 10, unchanged from the prior three generations.

That score does not mean the battery can be swapped through the back. iFixit opened both watches from the display side, heating the adhesive and easing the screen away from the case. The repair team described especially tight clearances around Series 12. It warned that a tool can cut the fragile display cable underneath.

Once the watch is open, Series 12’s stretch-release adhesive tab gives repairers a pull point rather than requiring the battery to be levered out. Its 1.461-watt-hour cell is slightly larger than the 1.403-watt-hour battery iFixit found in the 46mm Series 11. Those figures compare battery capacity; they do not show how long either watch lasts between charges.

Apple also changed the display connection. iFixit found a press connector beneath a bracket in place of the older ZIF connector and tape. The simpler connector has a tradeoff: replacing the display now also requires removing and replacing the battery. Battery access starts at the screen, while the screen itself is difficult to lift without damage.

Ultra 4 shows less movement in the teardown. iFixit gave it the same 4/10 score as the previous three Ultra generations. Its 2.444-watt-hour battery is larger than the 2.313-watt-hour cell in Ultra 3, but the display still has to come off first. The four pentalobe screws on the back expose the sensor assembly, not a direct path to the main battery.

For perspective, iFixit gave Google’s Pixel Watch 5 a 9/10 repairability score, saying its display can be reached with two Torx screws and a gasket and that the battery does not require dealing with adhesive. That is another score on iFixit’s scale, not a measure of battery endurance or repair cost. 9to5Mac independently summarized the same comparison and the Apple teardown findings.

The distinction is practical: Series 12 makes one internal step easier, while Ultra 4 retains the prior generation’s repair score. Neither result changes the main opening challenge. The published teardown findings describe internal access, connector layout and battery capacity; they do not establish service pricing, repair availability or real-world battery life.
