Alaska Airlines Joint Businesses Move Toward Regulatory Review

Alaska Airlines’ proposed entry into American Airlines’ Atlantic and Pacific joint businesses is moving toward regulatory review, but the two ventures are not yet approved. Reuters reported that Alaska submitted a filing to the U.S. Department of Transportation for a Pacific joint venture. The Alaska Airlines joint venture plan also includes an Atlantic component that the carriers describe as an intention.

The announcement, dated September 29, describes the broader plan as an intention to join both businesses. The airlines said they expect to file for U.S. approval and antitrust immunity and seek other relevant approvals in the coming months. The announcement did not set a decision date.

The separate accounts point to a specific distinction: Reuters described a submitted filing for the Pacific venture, while the carriers’ announcement outlined the wider Atlantic-and-Pacific proposal and its expected approval process. Neither source says regulators have approved Alaska’s entry into either joint business.

Reuters describes joint businesses as arrangements in which airlines coordinate schedules and fares and share revenue on international routes. The proposed move would extend Alaska’s existing relationship with American into two partnerships that already include other carriers.

American’s Atlantic joint business includes British Airways, Iberia, Finnair, Aer Lingus and LEVEL, according to the companies’ announcement. The Atlantic arrangement was formed in 2010. The Pacific joint business includes American and Japan Airlines and began later, the announcement says.

Alaska and American say the expansion would give customers more international travel options and strengthen connectivity across the Atlantic and Pacific. Those are the companies’ stated aims. The announcement does not identify new routes, fares or a start date tied to the proposal.

The plan also fits Alaska’s stated strategy to build a more global airline. The company says joining the partnerships would improve its international reach and help it compete with airlines that already participate in similar arrangements. Reuters reported that Alaska’s 2024 acquisition of Hawaiian Airlines added widebody aircraft and a larger Pacific network to support international expansion.

For now, the concrete development is a reported Pacific filing alongside a broader plan that still faces regulatory steps. The public materials do not establish when a decision will come or what the final scope of any approval would be. Any customer-facing changes remain unannounced.
