Databricks hit a $188 billion valuation on July 17 when it closed a funding round led by Coatue. The valuation represents a $54 billion jump from February, when the company raised $5 billion at $134 billion. Databricks is now the most valuable private AI infrastructure company outside of OpenAI.
Databricks doesn’t disclose exact raise size, but reports suggest roughly $3 billion. The capital funds acquisitions and expands Genie, the company’s SQL interface for business intelligence, and Unity AI Gateway, which tracks and controls enterprise AI costs.
The AI Infrastructure Play
Enterprises built AI infrastructure in 2024 and 2025. Now they need to operationalize it. Databricks sits in the middle: it ingests data, trains models, and deploys them. It competes with Snowflake on the data side and with AWS SageMaker on the ML side.
The $188 billion valuation suggests investors believe Databricks can own that middle layer as AI adoption expands. That’s a multi-trillion-dollar market if enterprises spend 10-20% of data budgets on AI.
Genie and Unity
Genie lets business users write plain English to query data. No SQL needed. It’s conversational analytics—a category democratizing data access.
Unity AI Gateway manages spend. As enterprises deploy more AI models, tracking costs becomes critical. A single model query can cost $0.01 to $10 depending on inputs. Unity sits between the application and the model, watching costs in real time.
The Path to IPO
Databricks is not public. At $188 billion, it’s too big to avoid the question forever. A 2027 or 2028 IPO seems likely. The valuation gives it room to grow—public market investors often pay 1-3x private valuations for growth-stage companies.
Databricks is betting that the AI infrastructure market will consolidate around a few winners. It’s positioning itself as one.
