Microsoft is testing a new Excel feature that lets a single cell hold lists, arrays and nested arrays. The preview is rolling out through the Beta channels for Windows<\/a> and Mac, and Microsoft\u2019s announcement warns that the feature may change before general release.<\/p>\n The change gives spreadsheet users another way to keep related values together without turning them into one text string. Microsoft says a list can hold items such as several project owners in one cell while keeping each name separately available for filtering and calculations. Users can create a list through the Insert menu or by pressing Ctrl+J, then enter items separated by commas or semicolons according to regional settings.<\/p>\n The Excel in-cell arrays feature also extends what formulas can return. Microsoft says arrays of different sizes and shapes can live as cell values or formula results, including arrays nested inside other arrays. That can keep a formula\u2019s result in one cell instead of immediately spilling it across neighboring cells. The company says nested results that previously could be truncated or produce a calculation error can now be handled by supported formulas.<\/p>\n Four new functions are part of the preview. FLATTEN removes levels of nesting, while HAS, HASANY and HASALL test whether one or more values appear in an array. Those functions could help users work with grouped data, but the feature is not yet a drop-in replacement for every existing spreadsheet workflow.<\/p>\n Microsoft lists several limits during the rollout. Conditional formatting does not inspect array contents unless a formula is used. Data validation cannot use a list or array as a dropdown source, charts do not expand an array into data points, and PivotTables cannot read array values as source data. Power Query also cannot load or emit array-valued columns, while Find and Replace cannot replace individual list or array items.<\/p>\n Most calculations involving nested arrays require Compatibility Version 3, which users can select in Formula settings. Microsoft says some existing formulas can return different results in that mode; workbooks that behave unexpectedly can remain on Compatibility Version 1 or 2. The feature is rolling out to Windows Beta builds 2610 (20520.20000) and later and Mac Beta builds 16.114 (26092111) and later. Microsoft says availability may vary as it monitors quality and performance.<\/p>\n Excel specialist Mynda Treacy, a Microsoft MVP, also described the capability as a Beta Channel feature and noted that behavior may change before a wider release. Her initial coverage demonstrates list creation, filtering and the new functions, while Microsoft\u2019s post supplies the official compatibility and limitation details.<\/p>\n For now, users should treat in-cell arrays as a preview rather than a stable format for important workbooks. The new model can keep related values together, but teams that rely on charts, validation lists, PivotTables or Power Query will need to test those workflows before adopting it.
