Seven new family apartments complete South Brisbane House, creating more space for Queensland families to stay together while their child receives critical medical care.<\/em><\/p>\n

BRISBANE, Australia, Aug. 31, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE)<\/a> — Ronald McDonald House South East Queensland has marked a major milestone in its support of Queensland families, officially completing its South Brisbane House with the opening of Level 7.<\/p>\n

The final level adds seven new multi-bedroom apartments to the House, purpose-built to accommodate larger families and those facing extended stays in Brisbane while their child receives medical treatment.<\/p>\n

These new apartments provide families with additional space and privacy for longer stays – helping parents, siblings and other family members remain together during what can be some of the most difficult periods of their lives.<\/p>\n

The completion of Level 7 also marks the final chapter in the development of South Brisbane House, which has supported families travelling from across Queensland and beyond to access specialist paediatric care in Brisbane over the past decade.<\/p>\n

Ronald McDonald House South East Queensland CEO Emma Thompson said the milestone was about far more than completing another floor of the building.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe completion of Level 7 is an incredibly significant moment for Ronald McDonald House South East Queensland, but what matters most is the impact it will have for families,<\/em>\u201d said Thompson.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen a child is ill or injured, families can find themselves hundreds or even thousands of kilometres from home, often for weeks or months at a time. Having somewhere they can stay together, close to their child\u2019s care, can make an enormous difference during an incredibly challenging time.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cThese seven new apartments mean we can better support larger families and those who need to stay with us for longer, giving them greater comfort, privacy and, importantly, the opportunity to remain together.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cSouth Brisbane House has been shaped by the families who have stayed here and by an extraordinary community of supporters who have helped make it possible. To now see the House complete is a very special milestone.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Among the first families to move into Level 7 is the Heather family from Tamborine Mountain, who have called the South Brisbane House home since September 2025.<\/p>\n

The family of 10 came to the House after three-year-old Cara was diagnosed with Stage 4 neuroblastoma, beginning an intensive treatment journey that has included six rounds of chemotherapy, surgery, two bone marrow transplants and 20 rounds of radiation.<\/p>\n

With Cara now requiring five cycles of immunotherapy across the remainder of the year, the family continues to rely on the House as a home away from home while she receives treatment in Brisbane. Eight members of the family are currently staying at South Brisbane House, and have recently moved into one of the new Level 7 apartments.<\/p>\n

Having previously been accommodated across two rooms, the move to Level 7 has already eased some of the day-to-day challenges of living away from home and had a positive impact on the family\u2019s experience at the House.<\/p>\n

The seven new apartments have been designed with families like the Heathers in mind, providing additional room for larger family groups and those whose child\u2019s treatment requires them to remain in Brisbane for extended periods.<\/p>\n

Level 7 was made possible through the support of the community and major funders including Clive Berghofer AO and Ronald McDonald House Australia, alongside contributions from a number of funding partners.<\/p>\n

Ms Thompson said the completion was also an opportunity to recognise the donors, partners, volunteers, families and broader Queensland community that have supported South Brisbane House throughout its history.<\/p>\n
